East Boston Anti-Displacement Zone

Prior to the start of luxury waterfront development five years ago, East Boston was Boston’s most affordable neighborhood. Now, public and private development forces conspire with intensified ICE action to completely eradicate the working class Latino community which comprises the majority of residents here—endangering their lives, destroying the fabric of community, and uprooting them. Converging with these threats, the City of Boston will launch a neighborhood planning process here this year.

Absent a robust resident voice and resistance, “Plan East Boston” will simply sell off what is left of East Boston to developers and ratify wholesale removal of its current residents.

With $40,000 from the Solidaire Network, City Life would be able to immediately mobilize our base in response to the current threat posed by Amazon’s city-approved expansion in East Boston and the city of Boston’s development planning process. These plans are already underway, and currently, there is no grassroots, people of color-led initiative to intervene in these planning discussions.
